Proper technique ensures optimal tape performance, horse comfort, and long-lasting results. Whether you’re new to taping or a seasoned pro, these tips will help you achieve the best outcomes every time.

Surface Preparation

  • Clean the area thoroughly—remove all dirt, lotions, sprays, or grooming products.
  • Use a shammy or microfiber cloth, rubbing with and against the hair lie to remove debris.
  • Ensure the coat is completely dry before applying tape.
  • For oily coats, a light alcohol rub or baby powder (then brush off loose powder) can help.
  • Any residue affects tape adhesiveness.

Cutting & Handling the Tape

  • Always cut round corners on tape ends to prevent peeling.
  • Separate the paper backing by gently stretching the tape and tearing the paper.
  • Avoid touching the adhesive once the paper is removed.
  • Rub the tape after application to activate the adhesive.

Application Tricks

  • Lay down the first and last 2–3" of tape with no stretch.
  • Apply in the direction of the hair lie whenever possible.
  • Remove slack from the primary (first) end before applying stretch.
  • For tricky spots, use anchor strips—tape sticks to itself for extra hold.
  • Do not over-stretch—the right amount of stretch is key for effectiveness and adhesion.
  • Never tape over infected areas or open wounds (unless using a non-stick pad).

Removal & Reapplication

  • Leave the application on until the reason for taping is resolved or tape needs to be reapplied.
  • Reapply if the tape loses stretch/recoil, collects debris, or comes off.
  • Remove tape gently, ideally in the direction of hair growth.
