Why is the hock so important to a horse? What can you do to help prevent hock injuries or support a hock after it’s been injured?

The hock functions to carry weight, push off the earth, and allow your horse to run, jump, turn, and play. The hock joints are such an important joint to all equine athletes, regardless of discipline. The horse's hock is made up of 10 bones and 4 joints supported by several ligaments.

Supporting the hock with Equi-Tape® basically creates external ligaments to help do the job of the internal ligaments. It also helps prevent the hock from moving past the horses normal range of motion. This is how Equi-Tape® is used to prevent injuries.

Given the fact that Equi-Tape® will decompress any areas the tape is applied, it will increase circulation to the hock, this will help the hock heal much faster. Coupled with its ability to support the joint, you will see horses with pretty much any hock issue get better faster.

So when should you use a hock support application?

1. Any horse with a hock injury

2. Horses who get hock injections

3. Horses with arthritis

4. Athletes training or conditioning for high impact events (running, stopping, jumping, turning)

5. Horses with back problems

6. Horses with stifle injury

A recent study done shows that when Equi-Tape® is applied to injured or arthritic hocks the horses range of motion, interaction with the ground and soundness increased in only four weeks. The horses taped in the study only need four applications of Equi-Tape®. So basically for less than $60 you can help pretty much any hock injury heal faster. Imagine how much a simple roll of Equi-Tape® could save you.
